(Technological innovation in the Digital Era of Fisheries)"。
(Hotel Nongshim, Busan)
TIDE (Technological Innovation in the Digital Era of fisheries)
In 2026, South Korea is undergoing a rapid digital transformation of its fisheries and aquaculture sectors, driven by a national push to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, and sustainable practices. Facing an aging workforce and changing climate, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) is accelerating the transition toward "smart" fisheries, aiming to increase per-vessel productivity to around \(416,400–485,800\) (KRW \(600-700\) million) by 2030.Key Innovations and Technologies in 2026:
- AI Applied Product Commercialisation: The Korean government is investing KRW 40 billion (U$26.75m) to support 20 projects, aiming to deploy AI solutions in real-world marine environments within one to two years.
- Smart Aquaculture Big Data Center (Busan): Launched in early 2026, this center is integrating generative AI for farm-specific consulting, automated feeding, and real-time monitoring.
- Land-Based Smart Salmon Farming: The Busan Smart Aquaculture Cluster is utilizing Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) to produce 500 metric tons of Atlantic salmon annually, with full-scale shipments starting in Q4 2026.
- Autonomous Ship AI Data Platform: A 30 billion won initiative aims to establish an AI platform for autonomous vessel navigation, engines, and remote control by May 2026.
- Digitalization of Fishing Gear: Adoption of IoT-enabled and eco-friendly fishing nets is growing to reduce plastic waste and enhance sustainability.
- Blue Food Research Networks: Pukyong National University is leading research into AI-based robotic controls for seafood processing and customized, high-value fisheries products. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8]
Strategic Objectives for 2026:
- Climate Change Adaptation: Development of high-temperature-resistant fish species and relocation of aquaculture sites further offshore.
- Transparency and Traceability: Strengthening seafood supply chain transparency through AI,, reducing fraud and ensuring sustainability.
- Overcoming Adoption Barriers: The industry is addressing challenges like high initial costs and an aging workforce by focusing on practical, user-friendly digital tools to increase worker adoption
