The Khao Kwan Foundation (KKF) in Thailand, one of the founding organizations of
the Alternative Agriculture Network (AAN) established in 1989 by Daycha Siripatra, has developed techniques for organic rice growing such as natural pests management, natural soil improvement (by local microorganisms) and selective seeds for organic rice production. The main principle applied in KKF is the use of natural materials available to help crops grow and protect our Mother Earth from environmental damage, so the land can gradually restore to its original state. Since then Daycha Siripatra with his KKF colleagues developed the techniques which are effective, low cost and simple but with high yield and good quality of rice and other crops..
One Taiwanese lady, Jane Chen currently stayed at USA was deeply impressed and moved by Daycha and KKF’s farming techniques. She personally supported Daycha’s KKF team to give lectures and implement practical works around Taiwan since summer 2011. Hence, the farmers especially the smallholders in Taiwan have been implementing KKF techniques over the past two years, mainly introducing some effective friendly-farming KKF practices.
Though KKF is now regarded as a fully developed civilians’ organic farming practices with no need of any high-tech and esoteric theory, the lack of scientific evidence remains its weakness.
The ultimate goal of KKF is to return the seed rights to all the farmers and without using pesticides and fertilizers in crop production but still with a good harvest. In this article we will introduce some hands-on experiences from the farming smallholders how they take three revolutionary technologies to practice KKF, namely 1. pest control; 2. soil activation; 3. selective breeding of rice. We hope every farmer just with their own observations and primary experiments can have such a revolutionary technology.
